7 Poor Reasons To Get Involved in MLM
Joining a mlm type of business for all the wrong reasons is a recipy for disaster. Find out about seven of the worst reasons for enrolling in a mlm opportunity, and exactly why this kind of reasoning can be so dangerous.
Network marketing, or "MLM" can be a great way to earn everything from a small additional income to a generous full time living.
However, many people join MLM or network marketing type opportunities without really knowing what they are getting themselves in to. This is probably one of the biggest reasons for the fact that some people have very low thoughts about this type of business ans many are falling ou very quickly.
MLM works for you alos, if you do it right and start with the right expectations. Period. That said, here are seven really poor reasons for enrolling in a network marketing opportunity:
1) Earning "easy money"
I know - the mlm-companies are very good a promoting their business as a simple 1-2-3 process that anyone can do and become an instant millionaire. Especially online it has almost become a standard to use once super long and totally over hyped sales letters.
This is the equivalent of claiming that anyone who can open a can of beans can be a master chef.
Don't get me wrong, I do think most people CAN make it in MLM if they put their minds to it. But you must be prepared to learn many new things and you WILL have to work for it. Make no mistake about that! MLM is not a get rich quick sceme. It is not a how much you invest and how much you gain money game.
2) Expecting that "spill over" will do all the work
Many mlm opportunities are built on what's called a "forced matrix". For example, in a 3x3 matrix, when you have sponsored your three first new members, the fourth will be placed under the first person you sponsored. This person has thus gained one person in HIS downline, without any effort on his part.
Now, some companies and especially "uplines" would have you believe that their top recruiters are so effective that the spill over from their marketing will automatically make you, who are joining at the very bottom right now, an instant success.
This is simply a pipe dream - it will never happen. Yes, you probably will get a few people spilled over into your downline, but nowhere near enough to guarantee your success. The sheer width of the matrix on your level, means that there is an enormous amount of representatives that will have to shear any amount of spill over.
And who says the top recruiters are as active as they once where anyway? Worst case scenario, they are now working on something else entirely, because their income in this particular opportunity is already secured with a "deal". So start with the right intention, that you build it. Do not buy and do not sell the myth of spillover.
3) Thinking that a product is so great, it will sell itself
This is a classic mistake, because many MLM systems simply aren't really about the product. This fact is difficult to swallow, I know.
As a greenhorn I remember joining this lottery syndicate-mlm, thinking that "everybody" would want better chances at winning the lottery - right? The disappointment was huge when I discovered the truth - some people even made fun of any attempt to mention this great new thing I had discovered.
Likewise, in mlm, it will not matter if you are selling a breakthrough product that contains every mineral and vitamin under the sun - if you do not understand what network marketing is really all about.
4) Doing an old friend a favour
We have all been there - an old friend you haven't met for years who suddenly calls you and want to set up a meeting about something he will tell you more about when you meet...
I'm not saying that this couldn't be a potentially good business. But calling all your friends is a very ineffective way to do mlm, and you should never join any opportunity only to do someone else a favour. Because in the end this is about you, your money and your career.
5) Earning a lot of money in a short period of time
Most mlm testimonials always seem to go something like this:
- In my first month I made $800 and now, in my third month, I have been able to quit my job and...etc.
While not outright lies, testimonials like these are usually collected from individuals who, through luck or skill, managed to join this particular opportunity from the very beginning. They are simply at the top of the pyramid and they often know exactly what they are doing - the're the mlm experts.
Like most offerings, mlm opportunities have a life cycle that grows rapidly in the beginning. During this phase of explosive growth it can be very easy to sponsor dozens of new people per day, with relatively little effort. After all, this is something entirely new and one well placed ad can do wonders.
However, if you join after this initial explosion, it is much more difficult to see quick results and it requires more effort to attract new people into the business. Patience, knowledge and the right strategy is required to succeed here.
6) Big name X endorses this program
This is somewhat related to the previous point. Mr. Heavy Hitter have made thousands of dollars with this opportunity already and he is not shy about telling anyone how EASY it was. And he's probably not lying either. It was easy - for him.
Because, like noted above, he probably got involved in this opportunity long before it was launched to the general public, because he already knows all the right people.
He (or she), also know their stuff, and have the resources (large email lists, advanced Internet marketing tools etc.) to quickly and efficiently let the word out to a large number of people.
If you are relatively new to this game, it is a very bad idea indeed to assume that you instantly could pull off feats worthy of a network marketing guru. Would you compare your golfing abilities to those of Tiger Woods?
I don't think so.
7) Thinking this will be a free business to run
I'm not talking about the membership fee of your mlm opportunity here, because that is given. But many people falsely believe that they can market entirely for free using the internet or social media.
While it's true that there are some effective low cost Internet marketing techniques you can use, you should never fool yourself into believing that Internet marketing will be a no cost affair. Moreover, the online competition is usually quite fierce. And building a business has alwas some cost on the long run. Still, building a network marketing business online is among the low overhead businesses.
To summarize; Multi-level marketing can offer an exciting new way to earn money. But your motivation for joining a mlm business shouldn't be based on one of the misconceptions mentioned above.
Treat your business like a business, and you will be okay and succesful on the long run.

Networking with previous customers
Most of the network marketers are busy using every source and resource to recruit new distributors and neglect to develop and grow the customer base, loyalty and value.
On the other hand, your direct contacts and customers may provide advice and support and it is THEIR contacts that create a new customer base, introduce you to the person who would need what they also use. Perhaps the term business networking is a misnomer. Think of it as people networking, because it is PEOPLE that make networking successful.
Do not forget to ask them the best question what I learned from Dale Calvert years ago: "Who do you know, who (..would benefit from this product, who shall use this product) I use this question also asking for new distributor referrals, targeted by area, profession or skill.
Your previous customers are going to be valuable to your future business. As you get each new customer you want to network with that customer again in the future, to keep your business in their mind, and to keep them on as a walking and talking billboard for your business. The future of your business is going to evolve to include repeat customers, and referral customers, both of which are vital to the ongoing relationship of your business, the consumer, and the local surroundings of your business. You shall aim to turn your customers to your ambassadors.
How can you network with your previous customers?
Even if your customers are online – or if they are offline, you can network with your customers. A simple note, or email is going to do the trick. Ask about their day; talk with them by name, and offer advice or to continue with the conversation when they have time to chat with you. Talk with your customers about what they have purchased, or how it worked for them. Ask if there is anything that can be done to improve the process, they went through while dealing with your business. That makes everybody feel important and it is also really important to have their honest feedback.
Network with your largest clients by taking them to lunch, or ordering them something special and having it delivered to their home. As you continue to acknowledge your largest clients, they will keep you fresh in their minds. They will tell others about what you have sent to them, and how they feel about your business.
The online business is going to use newsletters, e-zines, emails and coupons sent to previous customers as a method of networking and keeping in contact with previous customers. Keeping the lines of communication open with a customer, and with a previous customer is going to increase awareness of your products, and what you have for sale. This in turn is going to increase sales, one repeat customer at a time. But do not forget text messages and phone calls.
Never forget about your previous customers. In the offline business, and in online business you can network with your previous customers by creating mailing lists and using these mailing lists. State something along the lines of – because we have done business in the past, we find that now is the time to offer you this great advantage what we now have, and would like to give you a special price. Yes this is still advertising, but networking at the same time because you have established a relationship with that customer already and it makes her feel good that you did not forget her and she was not only a transaction. Everybody likes to be treated nice and feel important. That creates a goodwill toward you and your business.

Bridging The Gap Between Knowledge and Action in MLM
Chances are, you already know what needs to be done in your MLM business. You know you need to stop procrastinating. You know you need to watch less TV, play less online or Xbox games, less social media "hanging around". You know that you need to set smart goals and intelligent deadlines. And hopefully, you know you need to track your work, track your results, and put more of your effort into the aspects of your MLM business to give you the strongest results.
But there's a very big gap between knowledge into action also in MLM. Think of all the money that's spent on knowledge: whether it's a large companies trying to improve their efficiency, or housewives and stay at home dads trying to get into better shape. They know the adjustments they need to make, but they always fail to set habits and follow though.
Let's look together at some of the gaps that keep you from turning knowledge into profitable and useful habits.
The Fear Of Change
Failure can be comfortable. It represents a continuation of a routine that, at least on some level, has brought us a lot of pleasure. Now where this breaks down is that pleasure and happiness are two very different things.
Pleasure can be bought with a cookie, it can be found in the bottom of a bottle, you can get a short rush of it with a few minutes on Facebook.
Happiness is harder, and the road towards it is longer, winding, and littered with distractions. The constant pursuit of pleasure, ironically enough, keeps more more people away from becoming happy.
You Won't Learn By Doing
There are too many people who tried to do by learning instead of learning by doing also in the MLM industry. Talking about problems to death rarely solves them. People talk too much already. It's natural to want to go into a scary situation with knowledge at your back. But once you've learned the basics of a skill, start acting on it. Then look for new information once you've run into a serious roadblock, or have a smaller aspect of the skill that demands your attention.
You Rely On Motivation Instead Of Habit
It's okay to feel "unmotivated" sometimes, to hit a roadblock and need something positive to dig you out. But you're always needing to be motivated for any kind of positive action in your life, it's a sign that you haven't really put the energy you should into setting habits.
Habits aren't subjects that need motivation. Habits are things that we just do, whether it's a good time or a bad time. If you can devote one month to establishing a positive habit, chances are much better that you do it for a long time to come.
Accepting "Life Excuses"
Too many people take "life happens" as an excuse not to do the things that they should. It's almost like there's no effort to leap the obstacles that life puts in front of them. It's important to set uninterrupted times and uninterrupted places for the most important priorities cannot be violated. When you give yourself a choice between any two things, there's a chance you will take the less beneficial choice.
Set up at daily routine that eliminates those choices.
Going From Zero To A Hundred
When it sinks in how far behind we are on our goals, it's easy to try to do too much at once and destroy our desire to improve altogether. While there are people who can handle this sort of drastic shift, for most people in the MLM business it'll be best to start small, focus on repetitive action, and scale up from there - like I learned it earlier from multi million dollar earner and tody one of the best trainers of the MLM industry: Dale Calvert !
No More Excuses
The time for learning and not doing it over. Step up and start making a serious change in the way you approach problems... right now!
A few years ago I wrote an article about the pitfalls of procrastination in the ProfessionalMLM Magazine in Hungary, I though it is worth to share with you some of my thoughts, experiences also in this blog as I consider procrastination is the highest "business expence" or danger.
I trust, this article will help you in your MLM Business,

An Organized Office in the MLM Business - is it really needed?
Dear Fellow Networker,
Instead of using somebody else's definition of organization, let me ask you:
How organized do you want to be?
When we talk about getting organized people usually get an impression of a spick and span office with not a paper out of place. But my experience has taught me that a neat office does not necessarily have to be a very organized office. If you throw away every single piece of paper that comes to your office, certainly your office will be neat but not organized.
I believe that organizing is a relative term. It is all a matter of convenience.
In an organized office there will be a place for every thing and everything will be in its place. But at the same time you should be able to lay your hands on the object you need the moment you need it. And in this respect a little bit of clutter is ok.
It is not enough that you know where every thing is, somebody else should know it too.
In case you are not able to come in person and get something, somebody else should be able to do the job for you. It is here that labels and tags can prove to be very important. Every single file should have a label and every thing should be filed properly. It is not enough that you name things according to your convenience. The names should make sense to others as well, to your spouse for example or to your mother or anybody living with you in the same house hold.Because if you need anything they shall be able to find it too..even your gramma.
For every working man or woman in the MLM business also, the following are often pitfalls:
Forgetting Appointments
Forgetting Deadlines
Being Unable to meet deadlines
Being late for meetings and Appointments
Forgetting Names
Forgetting Telephone Numbers
Forgetting to take important documents and things along - /can be a fatal error MLM business also ../
Misplacing Objects and so on
By organizing your office, your binder, you can avoid most, if not all of the above maladies. In the end, both time and money are saved and to build your Network Marketing or MLM business will be much easier and hasle free...
To your success,
Silard Matrai

Eliminating the Burden
One more free chapter before the release of my new e-book "Debt Free Network Marketing"...
Here is a step by step instruction to ways you can tackle the expenditure above.
Joining fee and auto-ship:
Instead of going out to start looking for people to join your opportunity, one of the fastest ways to ensure cash flow is to LIQUIDATE your products!
See that stash of products lying around your house? (Your health supplements, skin care or water filters, etc) A lot of people leave their stocks lying around the house while going on a recruitment spree forgetting that once you sell off all your stocks, you will break even on your investment!
If you are wondering whether to keep those products so you can try them yourself, don’t worry. There is more where that came from. If you work hard to eliminate your investment costs, you can always purchase more products from the company later on and those products will most likely contribute to your sales volume as well.
The key is to get your WARM MARKET started on the products, and not pitch the opportunity to them straight away! If you try a good product at the supermarket, I am sure you will tell them all about it. Why should you treat your network marketing products any different? Are you afraid to talk to your uncle bob because your products are from a network marketing company?
Once you get your family and friends started on the products (It doesn’t cost you that much considering that those are money set aside for your business whether you sell or give them away), once they see results from it, they will start promoting the products to the people around them!
Don’t you see how by using your inventory when you first started off, you can potentially create runaway word of mouth giving you free warm leads offline? The best thing of all, you can choose from those groups of product users who can be a good business builder because of their trust in the product, you can get them in easily.
Doing so will also eliminate your costs when it comes to auto-ship. When people are actively consuming the product, all your downline will be on auto-ship and you will not be afraid of them canceling their auto-ship because it is taken care off by their warm market demand.
Training Materials
If you want to be successful in network marketing, your must invest in yourself. No I don’t mean investing in stuff that goes below your neck because there is a tendency for network marketers to eat a lot during group gatherings (and grow sideways!):
It is investing in what’s above your neck which is your mind!
Serious network marketers will always invest their hard-earned money in two things.
Leads
Training Materials to upgrade themselves like books and tapes
Since we know that people will be spending money on the second category, why not make a profit from it to fund your business?
One of the ways is to obtain training materials is to join free membership sites that provide free e-books or training material to help you expand your knowledge. These low cost, methods will help you tremendously instead of spending your much needed funds for surviving in your business on expensive hard-cover books that will cost $50-$300.
Phone Bills
As soon as your network begins to grow, you must consider switching to a phone plan that provides low-cost or unlimited access to all sub-lines. This is a great way to save on phone bills when calling your downline. Some telephone companies offer unique phone plans that give you a referral fee or even an overriding percentage over your referee’s or your network’s bill.
Other ways to cut down on phone bills is to go online to coordinate team meetings over the internet. VOIP /Voice Over Internet Protokoll/ tools like Skype and Hotconference are useful to do long distance opportunity meetings and counseling sessions with your upline and prospects. I made very good experience with Hotconfernce and we keep using it in business building very successful. People like the webconferences.
...some more will follow.Stay tuned!
